I our beloved City, we take pride in the vibrant community and the bustling streets. However, as charming as this is , it faces an issue that cannot be overlooked: our sidewalks are becoming overcrowded, primarily due to the sprawl of sidewalk cafes and other obstructions. For those of us who are commuters, parents pushing strollers or individuals who rely on wheelchairs, navigating these narrow pathways has become increasingly difficult, if not impossible.
It is crucial for our City to address this problem now. The City council intends to very soon amend the outdoor dining regulations, including Intro 724, that would reduce by up to 30% sidewalk space in front of cafes on congested corridors. The allure of street-side dining should not come at the cost of pedestrian accessibility. According to the World Health Organization, accessibility promotes independence and empowerment, benefiting not only individuals with disabilities but society as a whole.
Our proposal is simple: enforce current regulations on the spatial limits of sidewalk cafes, ensuring an appropriate minimum clear path for sidewalks as mandated by DOT’s Pedestrian Mobility Plan. This would safeguard the right of everyone to move freely and safely on the few corridors that are congested and warrant more space for pedestrians, and maintain a fair and inclusive public environment for all.
Imagine a City where everyone, from young parents to elderly citizens, can move freely without obstruction, where sidewalks are shared harmoniously. We call upon the City council and Mayor Mamdani to preserve our sidewalks for public use. Sign this petition to voice your support for an inclusive and accessible neighborhood. Together, let’s ensure our sidewalks remain a space for everyone.
