East Side residents and businesses have launched a full fledge attack on a DOT project to speed up buses on 34th Street (including our own M16) and give more space and safety to pedestrians who regularly overflow in the street and get killed at a disproportionate rate (16 pedestrian casualties per year over five years between 5th Avenue and Broadway).
What is most puzzling is that businesses and residents along 34th Street will benefit mightily: they will gain 1.4 miles of curbside delivery space, tourists and pedestrians will gain sidewalk extensions and safety, thousands of bus riders will arrive earlier to work.
