How is our nascent infrastructure maintained? This is a picture of the 9th Avenue bike lane between 35th and 36th street showing very dangerous conditions, as well as water ponding on half the lane.

We all like to complain about DOT , but in this case , when called, DOT fixed the condition in two days and we are grateful for this. Apparently this was the result of sloppy work by DEP workers or contractors.

But much more needs to be done to keep this infrastructure in good shape all the time. It is unconscionable that there is no protocol to inspect bike lanes similar to the existing protocol to inspect the roadways for cars. This segment of roadway has not been inspected in one year! It is clear that cyclists are much more vulnerable than drivers and a separate protocol should be put in place.
