MCB4 received a letter in response to its request for bus stops shelters: DOT will install benches at most locations. The department reached a $40 million agreement to add 875 benches at bus stops each year through 2035, eventually bringing seating to all the roughly 14,000 stops. The commissioner said “This is not a privilege. This is a human right,”
Manahttan Community Board 4 (MCB4) received a letter from the DOT acknowledging the recent survey by its Transportation Committee, which found 270 pedestrian ramps in non compliance with the law. The project was led over the summer by Co-Chair Jesse Greenwald using the application Walkmapper. The DOT committed to fix as many ramps as feasible with asphalt , and then slate the more complex ones in their overall capital schedule.
MCB4 joined MCB5 in protesting the hospitality industry bill to reduce the pedestrian clear path for sidewalk cafes from the current 10 to 12ft on major avenues to 8ft. The bill was not calendared last year but never underestimate the industry in finding ways to expand their reach.
Finally, MCB4 heard that the installation of the super sidewalk and a new bike lane ( 34th-51st) is a go for 2026. This will complete the corridor from 59th to 30th Street. DOT will present to the Transportation Committee in February or March with work beginning in the spring.
