Much is being debated in the press about Congestion Pricing merits. In our district which is overwhelmed by New Jersey commuter Traffic morning and evening, it would indeed be a valuable tool. The idling of cars waiting to enter the tunnel is causing much of the pollution we suffer from.

But another aspect of the Governor’s decision is even more concerning: the legislature voted the congestion pricing and it was signed in law by the Governor. It is shocking that this governor think she has the right to ignore the law. What other laws could be paused unilaterally? Rent protection? Health care? Reproductive freedom? We are entering in the dangerous zone where dictators carve their own rules without respect for the representatives duly elected by the people.

Whether or not we approve of Congestion pricing, the process is not democratic. For anyone who cares about enforcing the laws, this should be a concern. Friday September 27, the Judge will hear the lawyers’ argument to ensure that the governor is not ignoring the law.

New York County Supreme Court, 60 Centre Street, NY 10007 Friday, September 27, 2024, 9:00am EST
