In February, CB4 requested that Port Authority reopen 41st Street to traffic. The false sense of security the closure conferred could not possibly outweight the increase in actual pedestrian accidents the detour caused on 42nd Street’s intersections with 8th and 9th Avenues.
Last week, very quietly the Port Authority reopened the street citing community pressure as a reason. We owe it to Senator Tom Duane and Assembly Member Dick Gottfried who both intervened on our behalf with the Port Authority. In additon NYPD Commissioner appealed to Port Athority to reopen the street.
Thank you to all of them for their efforts on our behalf.
This reopeing should reduce the volume of trucks and buses that turn left on 42nd street , such a dangerous intersection. It is also critical to our efforts to alleviate the volume of Tunnel bound charter buses and trucks which crowd 9th Avenue at peak hours.
