Watch the red arrow at 37s – if you blink it will be gone

This is the intersection where our neighbor Jose Calo was killed recently by a driver turning left at one of the deadly mixing zones. The red arrow protection for pedestrians last 10 seconds, yes this is not a typo – ten, while cars benefit from 47 seconds of fully protected crossing time. This location is adjacent to Penn South, home to a very large population of seniors. And this elusive protection was obtained after years of lobbying. Keep in mind 29% of all fatalities and sever injuries for pedestrians occur at a left turn. No wonder Vision Zero is going nowhere!

Can you imagine the reverse: drivers get 10 seconds of exclusive green signal time, and then have to negotiate with crossing traffic for the next 37 seconds? How did we let cars and drivers hog all the space and time in our city?
