The Transportation and Infrastructure Committee is poised to vote on the long-term Transportation bill next Thursday, February 2nd.
Most of our Street Safety Improvements are funded by two federal programs: Transportation Enhancements and Safe Routes to School. Unfortunately the Transportation bill does not include funding for those two programs that have brought $ 50.3 million worth of safety improvements over the last 30 years in our congressional district.
Nationally, 12% of all trips are accomplished by bicycling or walking and 14% of all traffic fatalities are bicyclists or pedestrians. Yet biking and walking receive only 1.5% of all federal transportation spending.
In our district over 75% of trips are accomplished by walking.
Jerry Nadler, our Representative is on the Transportation Committee. Please contact his office to ask that they preserve dedicated funding for biking and walking.

Possible scriptHello, my name is [Your Name], and I live in [Your City/Town/County]. I’m calling to ask that Representative Nadler preserve dedicated funding for walking and biking in the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee. Walking and Bicycling are essential to our community where 75% of us walk to our destinations. The federal transportation investments that support these activities boost our economy, help individuals and government agencies save money, and directly address key transportation challenges such as congestion and safety. We are expecting a major redesign of the intersections of 42nd Streets with 8th and 9th Avenues, the two most dangerous in the city for pedestrians according to DOT. this redesign will not be possible without these funds .Nationally, 12% of all trips are accomplished by bicycling or walking and 14% of all traffic fatalities are bicyclists or pedestrians. Yet biking and walking receive only 1.5% of all federal transportation spending.
Will you vote to preserve dedicated funding for vital bicycling and walking programs such as Transportation Enhancements and Safe Routes to School?
