It was logical – but by no means a forgone conclusion- that jersey barriers would protect a two-way bike lane on West 40th Street near the Lincoln tunnel entrance. This segment will connect W38th and W39th Street crosstown bike lanes to the Hudson River Greenway through a path on 11th Avenue from W38th to W42nd Streets. The implementation starts in October.
A full lane of traffic has been repurposed. Vertical bollards will protect the other segments (except between 41st and 42nd which is a shared lane). West 38th street intersection will get much needed pedestrian refuges. See the full design here.
This is in response to the Community board’s request to redesign that section of the Bike lanes. We applaud DOT’s creativity in resolving the geometry of the 11th Avenue segment burdened with heavy Lincoln Tunnel traffic at a very complex intersection.
